Kathmandu– A rare musical event in the capital recently revived the ancient melodies of Dolpo, bringing generations-old traditions to a modern audience. The village of Pungmo in Dolpo district nestled in Nepal’s remote mountains, has preserved a rich musical heritage passed down through oral traditions.
On Friday, Moksh restaurant in Jhamsikhel became the stage for an extraordinary concert that blended these timeless songs with contemporary musical elements. Accompanied by 'Ser o Duo' and friends, the performers created a mesmerizing fusion, allowing the soulful tunes of Dolpo to resonate in a new light.
“This initiative seeks to preserve and share Pungmo’s musical legacy, ensuring its poetic wisdom continues to inspire future generations,” said organizer Eric Shrestha.

Larkey Lama of She Phoksundo Rural Municipality Ward-9 expressed his happiness over the musical concert that contributed to reviving an ancient song. He added, "It will help preserve the endangered song of Dolpa, as the local people of Pungmo have taken steps to safeguard their cherished music for future generations."
"The older generation has passed away, and the newer ones do not know," he said. He expressed his gratitude to the organizers and added, "Such events will play an important role in reviving and promoting traditional music."
Social worker Semduk Lama, a native of Pungmo and a key organizer, hailed the event as a “grand success,” with hundreds in attendance, reinforcing the importance of such efforts in keeping Dolpo’s musical traditions alive.
"We will further explore, research, and document these songs for future generations."
The evening saw an enthusiastic audience filling Moksha’s courtyard, captivated by the sounds of classical Dolpali songs. The concert featured an exceptional lineup of musicians, including Mr. Moa Chille, Mr. Tomas Miaus, Mr. Pau Roses, Mr. Dixit Adhikari, and Mr. Sudir Acharya, who delivered breathtaking instrumental performances.

Adding to the evening’s enchantment, vocalists Mr. Phunchok Baijee, Mr. Tsewang Dundup Lama, Ms. Pasang Baijee, Ms. Sonam Baijee, and Ms. Yungdrung Sangmu Lama enthralled listeners with their soulful and dynamic renditions.
Beyond celebrating cultural heritage, the event also served as a crucial fundraiser. Entry fees—Rs. 1,000 for the general public and Rs. 500 for students—were collected to support the documentation, recording, and archiving of these invaluable songs. A donation box was placed at the venue for additional contributions.
This grand musical gathering was a true celebration of culture and heritage, leaving attendees mesmerized and eager for more such events in the future.
